80% of Cat Bites Result in Infection

|

And being the over-achiever that I am, I got said infection. It's my own stupid fault. Here's the story.

I let Horus out of the upstairs yesterday to mingle with Freesia and Smudge. The day before when that happened there was just a lot of growling and dirty looks with a few chases. I figured it wouldn't hurt for them to continue their staring contests. I was unpacking some stuff upstairs when I hear Freesia screaming. I ran downstairs and Horus had cornered her under the table and she was wailing and screaming like a stuck pig - though Horus was still two feet away from her. I decided that this was too much drama for everyone involved, so I went for Horus, since he was closest to me.

Now, I should have gotten a towel to wrap around him before I picked him up. I should have at least rolled down my sleeves. Instead I grabbed him, scruffed him, scooped him into my arms and headed for the bathroom where I could isolate him. As we were walking through the library I loosened my grip on his scruff and he sunk his teeth into my forearm. It's not his fault. He was all upset from the fight. I'm not mad at Horus at all - it was my own damn fault.

I have two fairly big and deep puncture wounds from his top teeth, two small punctures from his lower teeth, and three punctures from his claws. I called my mom, and E, and the doctor. The doctor said all cat bites that puncture the skin must be seen. So when E got off the train we headed to Kaiser. They cleaned my arm, gave me some high powered antibotics, wrapped my arm in gauze and sent me home.

This morning however, my arm is throbbing, the puncture wounds are red, hard, swollen, and hot to the touch. Sounds like infection to me. So I called the doctor back. He said that he's not surprised it got infected. It will take some time for the antibotic to start working. He told me to draw some dots around the edge of the redness, and if it spreads beyond that by tomorrow I'll have to go see him again.

*sigh* It's been quite the week. And it's little consoluation that if I had been thinking at all, some of it could have been avoided completely.
